Swarovski Celebration & Giveaway

22 May

Swarovski is celebrating their 120th anniversary this year! They have launched two new designs of crystals to celebrate this milestone. Before we share these striking pieces with you, we thought we’d give you a little back story on where it all began.

The founder of the company, Daniel Swarovski, was born in what is now known as the Czech Republic, which is also renowned worldwide for their glass beads. His father owned a small glass cutting business, and Swarovski served as a young apprentice there, refining his glass cutting skills. In 1892, he invented an electric glass cutting machine that made the production of crystal glass possible. In 1895, Swarovski, along with Armand Kosman and Franz Weis, founded the company A. Kosman, D. Swarovski & Co., which was later abbreviated to K.S and Co. The business set up shop in Austria to take advantage of the nearby hydroelectricity for the energy-intensive grinding process that Swarovski had patented.

From this humble beginning, Swarovski has revolutionised the world of fashion, becoming the leading producer of precision cut crystal for fashion and jewellery. The company has stuck to its roots and is still owned by the Swarovski family – it is now run by the 5th generation of family members. Impressively, the business has grown to have a presence in over 120 countries worldwide!

The business has split into two separate entities; one is creating and selling loose elements (like the beads and pendants that we stock) under the name SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS, and the other business creates beautifully-made pieces, such as finished jewellery and crystal figurines under their traditional Swarovski name.

To commemorate this impressive achievement, Swarovski has released two new pendant designs. The first is the Edelweiss. The edelweiss flower, which is highly treasured in the Austrian Alps, has been Swarovski’s company logo for almost a century. Swarovski explains that “it stands for authenticity and tradition”, which we think is the perfect representation for the anniversary, as the business itself shares these traits. We are stocking the 14mm pendant of this design, which is an ideal focal piece of any piece of jewellery. The clear crystal colour, which is a firm-favourite, has sections that are gorgeously frosted, giving the pendant a really eye-catching finish.

The other design that Swarovski have released is the Infinity pendant. Crystal is timeless and will always be relevant, thanks to Swarovski continually releasing renewed and rejuvenated pieces. This pendant, with its endless entwined knot that has no beginning or end, is the ideal symbol of past, present and future for the company.

We just love Swarovski beads here at The Bead Shop Nottingham! What’s your favourite Swarovski piece? I think mine has to be the Triangle Pendants! We’d like to give you the chance to win the classic Edelweiss pendant and the innovative infinity pendant. All you have to do is comment below telling us what your favourite Swarovski bead/pendant or colour is. The giveaway is running until Sunday 31st May 2015 at midnight and 6 winners will be selected at random shortly afterwards. One entry per person.

Thanks for reading.

My new favourite has got to be the eidelweiss – it’s stunning and I’d love to win one! If not I just might have to treat myself!

Loving the new designs. I love just about everything Swarovski, I’m always working their beads into my designs.

My favourite beads and pendants are the stars and butterfly’s.

My favourite colours are usually anything purple, but when it comes to Swarovski’s colours I will buy anything that’s Vitrail Light. It’s such a beautiful colour.
Although I think the new Paradise Shine may fast become a close second.

I hope they are going to make the new Infinity pendant in other colours, I think it would look amazing in any of their colours.

My favourite shape would probably have to be the bicone, just because it is so versatile and sparkly! Colour is either red magma or fire opal – I adore their orange-red brilliance.

My favourite up till now has been the snowflake pendant. But that could change now!!

My favourite colour is Tanzanite, I don’t really know why I just love it, and I really love rivolis and 4mm round beads, you can do so much with them. All in all I just love the clean sparkle of Swarovski.

I love the xilions best because they are so versatile and come in so many colours. I don’t have a particular colour that is my favourite, but I do love the many shades of blue. They always make me think of the sea and have inspired some pieces based on this! However, seeing the Edelweiss I could be persuaded to make this my new favourite, it’s so pretty!!

My favourite Swarovski Crystal is the Faceted #5000 and colour is the Crystal Satin.

My favourite is the crystal 5500 teardrop bead – they look fabulous as a single drops on earrings, made into large flowers for pendants or as details on necklaces – and being crystal, they go with anything!!

i love bicones, so versatile and such colours. If I have to pick a favourite it’s crystal copper. Rich colour and lots of sparkle, yum. Cubic right angle weave in Swarovski bicones, that’s what I call bling.

I am fairly new to Swarovski elements and I love them all.
It’s quite a challenge to choose a favourite colour, it depends on the pendant. I love the AB hearts, paradise shine hot fix beads and the new edelweiss in the blue is perfect for frozen.

My favourite has been their snowflakes, in the ordinary crystal colour, simply because when the light catches it, you get a gorgeous array of flecks of brilliant shiny colours of the rainbow. Though now after seeing the new edelweiss, I think I’ve changed my mind!

I am a huge Swarovski fan – I love their designs in the shops and love using their beads to make my own jewellery too. My favourite Swarovski bead / pendant has got to be Amethyst Baroque! Too cute and beautiful.

It’s so difficult to choose a favourite, because whatever comes out next from Swarovski quickly becomes the next favourite! However, I think for versatility it has to be the bicones which team up perfectly with swarovski pearls. I think anyone can be taught to make stunning jewellery from their fantastic range, whether or not you are a beginner or an expert. Pick up your beads and have a go. The Colours too are amazing, but I think I have to join in with the vitrial colours for my favourite.
