National Beading Week 2015

Last week saw the first ever National Beading Week sponsored by The Bead Workers Guild and designed to bring bead workers together and encourage others to join in too. It’s a great way to engage with more people and it turned into a wonderfully social and inspiring week for us at The Bead Shop.

We had plenty going on all week, from competitions to workshops and demos, so I wanted to share our week with you all.

Demos with Kerrie Slade - collection

The very talented Kerrie Slade joined us for demonstrations, Q&A and bead ‘n’ biscuits. Kerrie showed eager beaders how to make several of her lovely Preciosa Czech glass bead designs. The patterns for her Kumihimo Pips and the Pipflinks can be found on our website here. The Ripple Crown and Pip candle decorations were an exclusive preview for National Beading Week, so they won’t be available until they’ve been showcased by Kerrie in Hamburg later this month, keep an eye out on our facebook page and we’ll let you know when they’re available.

Kerrie also had a cabinet of her wonderful beadwork patterns, all available from her website. My personal favourite is the Popper flowers, a very clever interchangeable design.

We were also joined by international beadwork artist Patty McCourt who taught her Cleo Jewellery set workshop, using Khéops® par Puca® Beads, Swarovski crystals as well as her own ‘Quad’ beads. Not only has Patty been designing her own beads, she teaches beading all over the world and is also an ambassador for National Beading Week.

Patty's work

She’s a natural choice for this role as her passion for beads is quite infectious and her work is quite spectacular, the photos really don’t do her intricate work justice. Everyone who attended Patty’s workshop came away delighted with their creations, the array of chosen colour combinations were lovely.

Our shop window had a beading week take over with loads of beaded flowers, which many of our wonderful customers helped make. We invited our customers to submit handmade pieces into a competition which were displayed in our shop window, we invited everyone (including our facebook fans) to vote for their favourite piece.

The competition went down very well, with many people stopping to have a good look at all the wonderful work. What I loved most about the competition was the variety of pieces that were submitted; embroidery, chainmaille, beadweaving, wirework and much more. You can still view the photo album on our facebook page, although voting has now closed.
2 - Cinders wish tiara

The piece that captured most people’s imagination and won the competition with most votes was the beautiful Cinderella inspired Tiara, made by one of our regular customers, more of Nicola’s work can be found on her facebook page here. The more you look at this piece the more detail you notice from the carriage shape to the subtle glass slipper in the centre.

We hope you enjoyed National Beading week!

Thank you Bead Shop Nottingham for all your activities during NBW! I was thrilled to attend the demos and workshop with my best friend and also my 7 year old granddaughter who thoroughly enjoyed Kerrie’s demos and loved being her little helper. Roll on next year!
