Button Stash

27 Oct

Hello, Lauren here!
Lauren

As part of “Anything can happen Friday” (16th October 2015), I shared some recent makes with you on facebook; jewellery I created using buttons! I recently inherited my Grandma’s entire button and haberdashery collection; she was an avid sewer and crafter, always had a project on the go, and probably one of my biggest inspirations.

I have decided to show you just a couple of simple jewellery items, that you could make yourself using your bead and button stash (or an excuse to get more buttons). I have started with the basics; earrings, a bracelet and a necklace, all inspired by my love of buttons and upcycling.
Button jewellery Collection

The earrings, were made using old beads from a broken bracelet, buttons from my inherited collection and a couple of Birch leaf charms to finish them off; I threaded the beads on to an eyepin and created a link, I then join this to the fish hook and attached a button, then finally added the charm at the bottom. A simple eclectic pair of upcycled earrings!

The Necklace I made using some threads from my stash, and several of my Gran’s vast collection of buttons, then finished everything off with findings from the shop! Create the pendant by threading different sized buttons in a stack on to a short piece of thread and simply tying a knot at the bottom to secure. I then added a jump ring to the top and you have a finished pendant. As I had some of the same thread left, I made my own necklace for it to go on (click here for a link to our very useful How to leaflet – showing you how to attach cord ends and clasps).

The bracelet was the final piece I made. Using 6mm jump rings, I Added two to each button, and connected them together with 4mm jump rings. Then I added a clasp and extension chain, as I love a tassel and they’re very popular at the moment, I made my own using some embroidery thread for a final flourish.

If you fancy having a go at making your own tassels, why not check out our useful visual tutorial we’ve added to our “How-To’s and Tutorials!” board on Pinterest. You can create tassels any size you like giving you endless possibilities as to what to do with them!

There you have it, a simple jewellery set made from upcycled buttons and beads! This could be the perfect way to make some personalised jewellery for Christmas presents (or for yourself), without breaking the bank.
Happy Buttoning, Lauren!
