1mm Brass Wire

Description

Our 1mm brass wire is made up of 70% Copper and 30% Zinc and is manufactured in Germany. This brass craft wire is a soft wire due to the 70% copper composition. This round 1mm diameter wire is easy to use but holds its shape very well. You will harden this wire whilst you are manipulating it and shaping into your jewellery, another term for this is work hardening.

The 1mm brass wire is an ideal diameter to make your own jewellery findings such as toggle clasps or for a focal pendant.

To harden this wire you simply just run the wire through your fingers several times. If your fingers complain (which they probably will until they’ve hardened themselves!) use a pair of nylon jawed pliers. We recommend these pliers if you are going to do a lot of wire work. The nylon jaws grip the wire without marking the wire. Running wire through the jaws will harden the wire making it stiffer and it then hold shapes much better.

Brass wire, like all metals, will tarnish over time. The time is takes to tarnish depends on many factors. Storing your jewellery when not in usein an air tight container, not exposing it to perfume or deordorant and occassionally giving it a polish with a dry soft cloth will contribute to a long life. Corrosion for brass jewellery wire isn’t a problem but it will tarnish – or oxidise. Cleaning brass wire is straightforward. Use water and a non abrasive soap and dry thoroughly.
