Exciting News!!!

Kickstarter - The Bead Shop

Our Kickstarter launched 11th September 2018 with the aim to raise £5000 to help us renovate and fix our tired and slightly broken workshop room after we were left in the lurch by builders.

At the end of 2017 we restructured how we were using our lovely 5 story Victorian building and condensed the business into 3 floors, to run our independent business more efficiently (not to mention less running up and down stairs). We moved our mail order department into our wholesale floor in the basement level. Enabling us to spend more time with customers and have the majority of stock in one area. We also combined our photography studio and office with our workshop space and fitted a new customer toilet. However the builders who were doing the work, moving a doorway and create a small room for the toilet, disappeared part way through leaving us in a frustrating situation.

We spent a long and frustrating time chasing the builders and trying to get them to finish the work. It eventually became apparent that they would not be returning and that we were not the only people they had let down and from a monetary and time aspect it was not worth us pursuing the matter further. So we drew a line under it and not wanting to let the situation get the better of us we took control and decided to fund finishing the work by other means.

Fortunately we had the opportunity in the summer to work with the Grads4Nottm scheme run by Nottingham Trent University who pair students with business’ in Nottingham to help with specific projects. One team of student were tasked with redesigning the workshop room, making it a multi-functional  and creative environment. They did a great job and helped us form a plan to which we hoped to use to secure a grant. However it became apparent that grants were just not available for helping businesses in the retail sector. This is when we decided crowd funding would be a great way to raise the fund and created our Kickstarter campaign.

The we hit our target of £5000 with 10 days will to go and by the time we the campaign ended on 12th Oct we had raised 110% of what we needed.

By renovating and update our workshop room it will help our creative team teach a wider range of skills and see our grade 2 listed Victorian building reach its full potential. So as you can imagine we were all thrilled that we had surpassed our target and we could get started on the work.

You can watch the progress of the renovations on our Facebook and Instagram stories. There are several time lapse videos of Robin sanding and varnishing the floor which are surprisingly mesmerising to watch.
