We’ve been busy working on our new set of kits. These are our flower jewellery collection, previously mentioned in our newsletters. I created the Sunflower and Daisy for a workshop we ran last year, the examples have been sat on my desk pleading to be created into a kit ever since. Then chatting to Hana a little while ago we decided 4 flowers would make a great collection; we have 2 Poppies, a Sun Flower and a Daisy. So I thought I’d share with you some of our source images and starting points.
Flower are wonderful focus for creative interpretations, a flower in it’s many forms are instantly recognisable as a flower even if you don’t know it’s variety. Now our flowers aren’t anatomically accurate, but I wanted someone to be able to recognise them for their at them for their type. So we’ve stuck with classics! I love poppies, they’re so varied and come in so many different shades. We had to make a red one, it’s what most people would imagine when conjuring an image. However I also love blue ones, if a little rarer.
This is an image I took in my parents temporary garden a few years ago, in between house moves – it was full of stunning poppies, in many colours. This photo shows a lovely pink shade but it was the shape of the petals captured here brilliantly that I used to help create that wide flared petal shape.
This is a lovely bunch of flowers I received from my sister several years ago, they lasted ages and we’re so vibrant. I’d not previously seen sunflowers in a bouquet before, but they we’re stunning. They’re a great signifier of summer and such an iconic shape.
For me Daisies are an understated pretty flower – I have always loved them since making daisy chain as a small child. I moved house recently and this patch has been growing and re-growing right in the centre of our lawn which has made me very happy.
The Sun Flowers and Daisy share a lot of similar characteristics with their shapes even if their sizes vary wildly. Layering the petals really helps build a full effect and I had fun figuring out the lengths to make the petals. The first Daisy I made (above) wasn’t quite right the petals were too sparce.
Look out for the next blog post in the series where you'll see all the finished flowers and I chat through the different features of the kits!
