I love an excuse to give and receive gifts, particularly if it involves trying a new craft or discovering a new independent maker. I have a couple of special women in my life that I like to gift items on Mother’s Day. My daughter Leah is always looking for ideas for me too! This has me think about gifts away from the generic supermarket flowers and chocolates. So I’ve written a gift guide of my favourite last minute independent Mothers Day gifts.
Gifts
I have been admiring Tammy of Two Tabs Jewellery earrings since she first applied for a job with us. She hand paints the most incredible flowers on to her polymer clay creations. It amazes me how neat and accurate her work is. My current favourite is this pair with beautiful daffodils and spring flowers. They would make an incredible gift for a special person in your life. We have a selection available at The Bead Shop with more available on her Etsy.
I am hoping that I will be receiving a gift from Teeth and Claws. Nicola L Robinson is a talented designer I first discovered at Nottingham Castles gift shop. She specialises in dragon, bat and cat illustrations (all my favourite beasts). I love her parent and baby dragon gift cards as well as beautiful coasters.
Mothers Day always makes me think of daffodils. My oldest memories of the day are going to church and handing out bunches of daffodils to the women in the congregation. This is why I chose to make the new felt daffodil kit we are stocking for my mum. I’ve really enjoyed making the kit despite burning myself on a glue gun in the process! The kit has enough spare felt to make several more flowers for the other special women in my life. I have swapped to quick drying fabric glue now though! We will have these kits with us at the Ay-Up Market in Nottinghams market Square Friday to Sunday this week.
Sticking with the daffodil theme I recently spotted this stunning necklace on Instagram. I love Sugar and Vice’s bold designs particularly their plant collection.
Another daffodil I spotted on Instagram is This Thing Is Strings beautiful version. Now stocked in Handmade Nottingham (along with many many amazing gifts).
One of my favourite Mother’s Day gifts from Leah is a little felt cactus. She made it at a workshop taught by the lovely Laura of Little Egg. You can buy similar ones from Handmade Nottingham too.
Activities
I recently did a fantastic workshop with CrzyBest and Leah, it was so nice spending time crafting with her. Which made me think of other workshops that would make a lovely activity to attend together. One example is making beaded roses with Lesley Belton. Lesley will teach you the Victorian beading technique perfect for creating effective rose petals. Then how to turn them into the perfect small bouquet. A wonderful way to spend quality time with your Mum.
And if you do fancy sticking with the traditional flowers there are some amazing independent florists. My favourite is Louise from Flowers By Loulou. She makes the most stunning bouquets and her letterbox flowers are second to none.
I hope my favourite last minute independent Mothers Day gifts has helped give you some ideas and inspiration.
